I’d been thinking for a while about having an online version of my Zettelkasten, and how I can use it to be more productive. Ever since I found out about the system over a year ago at the time of publishing, I’d always wanted to create something using the Zettelkasten as almost like an engine of sorts. Basically, I wanted it to work for me. (foolishness… only now that I discover that knowledge management is its own full-time job)

I’ve gone through stages of getting into PKMs, (strangely not unlike the stages of grief)

  • The initial excitement, “Oh wow! This is so cool! Everything is so cool!” Before subsequently jamming all content I consume (articles, YouTube, books) into my second brain,
  • The slowly sinking realization, “Oh wow… Now I’ve got all of this stuff in my vault… What now?”
  • The despair, “Oh wow. I gotta read all the stuff I put in and synthesize my own thoughts?? But there’s so much to read!”
  • The begrudging acceptance, “Fine. I’ll read it, don’t expect me to make anything though.” And more recently,
  • The tentative seed of hope, “Oh wow, humans are really cool. Look at all the stuff they’ve made! I wanna try too…”

Fortunately one day Quartz fell into my timeline (if you’re interested in making your own digital garden, I highly recommend you check it out). By this point, I had been using Obsidian for a while before migrating to Neovim + obsidian.nvim so I thought, “Why not try it out?”

It wouldn’t be until about 5 months later—after the first fleeting thought and spark of curiosity—I would finally get off my ass and make this work. I’m hoping that this can be a space for me to read and write more deeply. I want this place to serve as a reminder anytime I’m surfing YouTube, “Do I really wanna click on another 3 minute clip of this content creator or do I wanna do something else?” Not really a pressure to do something productive even, just enough space to stop me from reflexively consuming content.

Anyways, welcome to my digital garden!
